Frequently Asked Questions

What do you suggest for my first appointment?

We always suggest that each of our guests start out with a 90-minute Traditional Thai massage.  In Thailand a Thai massage can last 2 hours or more depending on the individuals needs.  We like to start each of our guests with at least a 90-minute Traditional Thai massage so that there is time to perform bodywork over the entire body and have time to focus on the areas that need more attention.

The Thai’s understand that a problem in the back, for example, is related to issues else where in the body.  In order to fully address a problem area in the back its important to also spend time on the legs, arms and neck.  We have seen significant results that benefit our guests when they schedule sessions for 90-minute or greater.

What should I expect at my Thai massage session?

You should expect a relaxing and rejuvenating experience.  Come dressed in loose fitting clothing like pajamas.  You can also allow time prior to your session for changing into traditional Thai massage clothing that we provide.

The massage session will be performed on a thin floor mattress or on the table to allow maximum comfort and mobility during the session.  To Start, your practitioner will kneel at your feet in a “wai” (prayer like) position.  This is a sign of respect for the guest.

At the end of your massage you will be completely relaxed and refreshed.  A number of guests report that they have fallen asleep or are amazed at how relaxed they became with the progression of the massage.  You should always double your water intake for 48 hours after your session to help the detoxification process of your muscles and report any medical conditions to your practitioner prior to your session.  Try to refrain from eating at least 1-hour prior to your session.

How does Thai massage compare to Western massages?

Traditional Thai massage tecques that allow practitioner to utilize their body weight.  The guest is fully clothed and no oils are required.  Western style massages require the guest to undress for oils to be applied to the body and the massage is most often performed on a table.

Western massage will typically focus on a specific area of the body where the guest has a given concern.  Thai massage always performs work on the entire body addressing the guest’s overall well being to help the body function at its highest levels..

Additionally, Thai massage uses point pressure to open energy lines or “sens” in the body as diagramed throughout Asian culture.  The energy work is combined with stretching techniques to open the guests body creating a relaxing and simultaneously  invigorating experience.  A Thai massage practitioner may utilize their hands, elbows, knees, or feet throughout the massage. Rest assured Thai massage is never painful.  Western massage mainly focuses on kneading of muscular tissue through compression and various hand movements.

Thai massage has been practiced for well over 2500 years, kept in its traditional form, and is becoming increasingly popular in the West.

What is Thai Herbal massage?

Thai Herbal massage is another popular type of Thai treatment, and is a truly unique experience.  Stretching, point pressure and hot herbal compresses combine to provide the utmost in muscular and mental relaxation.  The blend of traditional Thai herbs used in this massage has a relaxing and simultaneously invigorating effect on the body and mind, soothing sore and over-worked muscles, while giving a boost for the body’s energy level.

Hot compresses are also excellent for stiff, sore or pulled muscles and ligaments, back pain, arthritis, chronic pain or injury, disorders of the internal organs, skin diseases, migraines, and chronic stress or anxiety.   Herbs for the compresses are blended with attention to the therapeutic needs of the individual, and are heated in an herbal steamer. Hot herb bundles are applied to the body during a massage session.

It is recommended that men shave a few hours prior to their appointment time, rather than immediately before.

What to expect on Facial

When receiving a facial, your esthetician will respect your time and relaxation while talking only at specific points throughout the treatment. She will explain the treatments you have chosen and can also explain the difference in other treatments beginning of the session. Coming to Sabai Thai Spa for a facial treatment is just as much about the mind as it is about the body. Your aesthetician will help you drift into a full relaxation state by remaining quiet but please feel free to ask any questions or mention any concerns of focus you might want to share. She will take her lead from you.

Comedomes (blackheads) exist in every skin and your esthetician will spend time required on extractions. Areas such as the sides and top of nose, forehead, on and under the chin, sides of cheeks, eyebrows, behind and in the ears, and neck will all be examined closely.

60minutes really does mean 60mins

Some spas shorten 60 or 90 minute skincare treatments or massage therapies to 50 minutes and 75 minute to suit their schedule, and ultimately book more treatments within the day. We value your time, we also value your business. We do not cut corners in anything we do and the best motto for any service company is to “treat people as we would want to be treated”. At Sabai Thai Spa, you receive the attention of your professional therapist and aesthetician for the full time blocked for your treatment.

When booking an appointment, clients may be asked to provide a valid credit card number to hold a reservation. No charges will be transacted until your service is completed and you’ll be able to pay for your services with your choice of credit card, Interac or cash.

Appointment reminder

We will phone you with an appointment reminder 1 day notice. Despite our best efforts, you may not receive a courtesy reminder and ultimately, you are responsible for keeping track of appointments.

Why I need to arrive on time for my appointment:
Always plan on arriving at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. We can not always accommodate walk-ins your appointment time may be given up if you arrive late without notice. Let us know if you’re running late. We will do everything we can to accommodate you when you arrive. Depending on the circumstances, your treatment may have to be performed by an alternate aesthetician or therapist; your treatment may have to be substituted for a shorter treatment or worst case, rescheduled in order to accommodate the schedule of those clients who arrive on time for their appointments after you. We want you to thoroughly enjoy your spa treatments as you have come to expect them, so please plan to arrive on time, or better yet, arrive early and consider slipping into a relaxing soft music and ginger tea, while you prepare for your treatment

24 Hour Cancellation Notice Required

In order to hold your reservation we often turn away other clients. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice (and no-shows) results in inconvenience to others, wasted time for the aesthetician/therapist scheduled for your treatment and is our largest cause of lost revenue without recourse to the spa. Unfortunately, our only remedy has been to increase the prices of our services to cover this loss. Clients tell us that price/cost is very important in their purchasing decision, so, to prevent unfair increases in our prices, we will charge the full amount of the scheduled services (or the equivalent deduction from gift certificates) to those who cancel appointments and do not allow us time to fill the empty time slot or do not show for their scheduled appointment at all. We sincerely hope that with some consideration you understand why this policy is required and why we cannot make exceptions to it. If you need to cancel your scheduled appointment, simply call us at (604) 985-8896 with at least 24 hours advance notice. No emails please.

We regularly phone, email or text appointment reminders. We realize that sometimes emergencies happen or sudden illnesses occur that can prevent you from giving us the required 24 hours notice of cancellation (48 hours for groups). In these instances, your credit card will only be charged 50% of your total service (equivalent deduction from a gift certificate).

We have limited space in our retail areas so we’ve make a significant effort to only carry products we have the most confidence in to help you reach your skincare goals. We do not pressure our staff to sell products in our boutique. If any of our aestheticians recommend a product, it is because they sincerely believe that the product will be a benefit to you. Your aesthetician will explain what the product is and why it will make a difference in the condition you are concerned about.
